Where Not to Digital Nomad in Ecuador

Guayaquil

Ecuador’s largest city and main port, Guayaquil has undergone a major transformation in recent years. It has a few cute areas worth exploring and a gondola, however it is still one of Ecuador’s least cool places.

If you are planning to go to the Galapagos (see below), you will likely fly there from Guayaquil. I think it’s worth spending an extra day to see the city, but that’s really all you need.

It also has a reputation for being a little ‘seedy’. I was told by other Ecuadorians to hide my necklaces when walking around Guayaquil and not to go out at night, especially alone.

Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are absolutely incredible, one-of-a-kind places that you must visit if you are a digital nomad in Ecuador. However, the WIFI on the islands is dismal at best.

I made the mistake of trying to work one day and I got maybe 4 hours of work done in the 12 hours I tried working. Unless you don’t really need a strong connection, it’s not worth it. Especially when there are so many cool things to do on the islands instead of working.

Ecuador may get overlooked by people traveling to it’s more famous neighbors (like Peru), but this amazing country has so much beauty to be discovered. The culture is so special and the people are welcoming. I loved my time as a digital nomad in Ecuador and think of it as one of my favorite places I’ve visited.
